ABU Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science at Ahmadu Bello University was established in 1962 as one of the pioneer faculties of the University. The new faculty was able to utilize the resources already in existence at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria to form the nucleus of the new unit.

The faculty offers undergraduate and post-graduate degrees and was one of the two early post graduates degrees awarded by a faculty of the university.

History

The faculty was established in 1962 with six departments:Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Geography. Later in 1968, the departments of Botany and Zoology was merged to become the department of Biological Sciences. Other changes included the founding department of Chemistry giving birth to three new departments, Biochemistry in 1975, Textile Science, and Technology in 1980 and Chemical Engineering formerly Industrial Chemistry. Also in 1967, with funding from the World Health Organization, a diagnostic service unit was established in the Biological Sciences dept, the unit offered services to units in the medical, agricultural and science faculties. In 1969, it became an independent dept and started offering degree programs in 1971.

One of the first building projects of the university was the Faculty of Science complex which housed the dept of Chemistry and added extensions to the depts of Physics and Biological Sciences. The faculty inherited two lecture halls from the college of arts and science and built two extra halls in 1977. The faculty also has laboratories for research work.
