Akanni Doherty

Joseph Akanni Doherty was a Nigerian medical doctor and politician who was a member of the Action Group. He was chairman of the Lagos branch of the political party and later became the vice president of the party's Western region. Originally from the Nigerian Youth Movement, Doherty along with Mbonu Ojike and Akinola Maja were part of an emergency committee which was drawn to provide opportunities to unite two major political movements in the southern part of the country, the fractured Nigerian Youth Movement, post Azikiwe and the emerging members of the Zikist movement and the NCNC.

He was one of the principal pioneer members of the West African Student Union, serving as a member of the union's executive council.
