J. Bagan Benjamin was a Newspaper entrepreneur who was editor of the Lagos Observer. He was a Christian of Wesleyan denomination.

Benjamin was a liberated African in Nigeria, and originally worked as an assistant agent for a British firm, Walsh & Brothers. After the collapse of the firm, he entered the auction business but later left it for the printing press. (1) After the collapse of the Observer, he started a new paper, the Lagos Echo towards the end of the 1890s, however, like the Observer, the Echo did not last long.
