Marcos Augusto Cardoso was a talented and progressive Nigerian carpenter who was a liberated slave from Brazil. He was noteworthy for his work in building construction in Lagos and Dahomey and constructing the first spiral stairway. He was in charge of the construction of the old Holy Cross Cathedral and also an early church in Dahomey. He also helped in the construction of schools around Lagos. He was married to a daughter of Amaro Marinho and he died in 1912 in Bahia Brazil, where he had earlier returned to.
