Muhammadu Kobo was emir of Lapai from 1953 to 2002 and was one of the longest serving monarchs in Niger State history. Prior to becoming emir, he was a member of the regional House of Assembly and the House of Representatives. After 1954, he became a member of the Northern Nigeria House of chiefs.
He was educated at Agaie Elementary School, Bida Provincial College and the Katsina Training College. He began his career as a teacher at his alma mater, the Agaie Elementary School. He then worked with the Bida and Okenne Middle Schools. From 1947-1952, he was headmaster of a few middle schools in the middle belt. In 1951, he became a member of the Northern House of Assembly and was later coronated in 1953.
