OAU Faculty of Agriculture
The Faculty of Agriculture at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife was established in 1962. Like most of its faculty counterparts at the university, the main organ of decision making is the faculty board headed by the dean and assisted by a viced dean. It utilizes a commercial farm as a practical research and economic venture.
From 1962 to 1967, the new faculty was ran as a non departmentalized unit before the establishment of five new departments: Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, Animal Science, Plant Science and Soil Science. After the movement to Ife in 1967, a teaching and research farm was established to aid in instruction. In 1977, a five year bachelor program was started which included spending a year as an intern or to gain practical training.
During its early years, faculty was helped with assistance from the United States Agency for International Development which contributed to staff and research development programs and also a special relationship with the University of Wisconsin. Over the years, the faculty was able to grow into one of the foremost in agriculture instruction in the country that included a well trained Nigerian staff strength though the Home Economics degree program is four years.
The faculty carries out basic and applied research in agriculture.
