The Obafemi Awolowo University Faculty of Social Sciences was one of the five pioneer faculties of the university. Originally started out as the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies in 1962.

The Center for Gender and Social Policy Studies is affiliated with the faculty.

History

The Faculty officially became that of social sciences during the 1962/1963 session. At inception, it had about 4 academic staff members and granted a degree in economics though the early students also specialized in business management, political science and sociology. The foundation of the faculty is the department of Economics in which the Political Science department emerged out of during the 1967/1968 session and started granting a full fledged degree in Political Science, during the 1975/1976 session, the pol sci department began granting a specialization in politics, philosophy and economics. A year later (1968/1969), the faculty welcomed the geography unit of the university into its fold. Further departments were added including the department of Demography and Social Statistics, department of Sociology and Anthropology and the department of Psychology. The faculty also as a research unit called the Center for Industrial Research and Development and another called the Institute of Population and Manpower Studies.
