Jonas Nwuke

Jonas Happy Elemuwa Nwuke was the first indigenous provincial commissioner for Port Harcourt province who was also regional minister of state for Works in the Eastern region during the first republic. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, King Nwuke, he was installed paramount Chief of Etche in 1958 and assumed the title of Ogbuzuo II and Onyeisi of Etche.

Nwuke was a member of the Eastern Nigeria House of Assembly and served as a parliamentary secretary to the minister of Internal Affairs.


Nwuke was born to the family of Jacob Kasirim Nwuke. He attended Government Lower Middle School, Okrika and the Yaba Pharmacy School. He joined the Ahoada Native Authority in 1944 as a dispenser, he also worked for the Government and later C.F.A.O. before founding his own pharmacy, Eastern Chemists in Port Harcourt. In 1955, he became the chairman of the Ahoada County Council.
